Wildfire Season Gets Climate Smart

Lightning

Unstable temperatures have brought about more frequent lightning storms and more severe periods of drought. This has resulted in a significant increase in instances of wildfire across Canada. Now there are more than 8,000 wildfires a year, affecting areas in almost every province and territory.

Did you know that the average area burned in Canada is 2.5 million ha/year? While the majority of all fires are caused by humans, these fires often occur in more populated areas and are usually reported and extinguished quickly. Fires caused by lightning account for the majority of damage since these generally occur in isolated areas.

Wildfire season, from May to September, can be an incredibly testing and traumatic time. By taking some simple precautions ahead of the event, your clients can help protect their families and their businesses. We are committed to providing our brokers with timely information to help your customers reduce and prevent risk. We have created a library of Wildfire information and resources on our Climate Smart web page that you can share with your customers.

We’ve created a set of step-by-step infographics to make preparing for a wildfire easier. Our Home Wildfire Plan infographic is designed to help your clients put a plan in place to improve the safety and security of their homes and families in areas under threat of wildfire. Since wildfire affects every aspect of life, we’ve also prepared a Business Wildfire Plan infographic to help your commercial clients plan ahead and prepare their businesses for the effects of wildfire.

By providing the information your customers need to prepare for a disaster, we hope to minimize the likelihood that they will experience a loss.
